Part - One

Biography of Thabarwa Sayadaw U Ottamasara

Thabarwa Sayadaw U Ottamasara was born in Sagaing Division, Upper Myanmar on 26th October 1969. His parents are U Tin Maung and Daw Khin Khin Myint.

Sayadaw passed the Matriculation examination with flying colours in 1986. After completing, B.A (English, Honours) at Yangon University, he became a young entrepreneur and successful businessman within a short period of time.

After 1999, business declined massively and became greatly depressed over his failed business ventures.

As suggested by one of his friends, Sayadaw started to learn and practice Vipassana Insight Meditation under the guidance of Mogok Vipassana Teachers.

Sayadaw first encountered the teachings of Buddha and the theory of the emptiness of mind and matter at the age of 29.

Subsequently, he went for the retreat at International Meditation Centre (Sayagyi U Ba Khin) and Dhamma Joti Meditation Centre (SN Goenkaji) in Yangon.

After the 2nd round of retreat at Mogok Vipassana Meditation main centre in Yangon, Sayadaw successfully abandoned all his stress, sadness, worldly possessions, attachments and grasping completely.

After only 3 years of practice, a deep realization of Truth was born in him. Out of gratitude for the Buddha and his teachers, Sayadaw began to teach Vipassana Insight Meditation.

With the intention of distributing materials to propagate the message of Original Truth, Sayadaw totally abandoned his business ventures, properties and founded “From Avijja to Vijja” Wisdom Sharing Foundation in 2002.

It later became the single most important source which housed wide range of Vipassana Insight Meditation media. Sayadaw became popular among the Buddhists and people of different religious backgrounds in Myanmar.

In 2002, he was ordained in Yangon by Sayadaw U Nayyasagara and started to teach Vipassana Insight Meditation.

In 2005 Sayadaw became famous as 'Tsunami Sayadaw' for a series of VCDs he produced that recounted the events of the tsunami and the lessons that it taught human kind.

In 2007, Sayadaw established Thabarwa Centre (Downtown) (45th street meditation centre) and Thabarwa Centre (Thanlyin).

Today, Sayadaw teaches Dhamma and Guided Vipassana Insight Meditation in various institutions, schools, hospitals and individual residences in Myanmar and overseas.

Sayadaw even saved many terminally ill patients who were given up by doctors and specialists.

Through his teachings, many people, young and old, sick and healthy, rich and poor around the world are learning to translate ‘ignorance into knowledge’, ‘greed into compassion’, ‘hatred into abandonment’ and ‘Atta to Anatta’.

Sayadaw remains a well-known name throughout the shores of Myanmar and beyond.
